The Honduran president's brother, Juan Orlando Hernandez, has been sentenced by the United States court to life in prison after he was convicted over "state-sponsored drug trafficking," according to prosecutors.

Hernandez's brother, Juan Antonio "Tony" Hernández, was a former congressman and was sentenced in Manhattan federal court by U.S. district judge P Kevin Castel.

Castel also ordered Tony to forfeit $138 million. Tony was convicted in October 2019 with charges carrying a minimum of 40 years sentence, according to The Guardian report.

Assistant U.S. attorney Matthew Laroche said that Tony conspired with his brother.

"He caused brutal acts of violence," Laroche was quoted in a report.

The assistant attorney further said that Tony transferred funding into National party campaigns for protection.

"He secured protection from investigation, arrest and extradition by paying massive bribes to politicians, like his brother, and like (former president) Porfirio Lobo Sosa," Laroche was quoted in a U.S. News report.

Laroche also claimed that the Honduran president had accepted millions in bribes.

This includes the $1 million from El Chapo, which was funneled to their party's funding for elections.

Tony's lawyer Peter Brill that they will be filing an appeal.

Meanwhile, the Honduran government rejected allegations of the U.S. prosecutors that it was a nation that encouraged drug trafficking.

The Honduran government said in a statement that it was false statements of drug traffickers, wanting to seek benefits for themselves and their families in the United States.

Court documents added that corrupting institutions to transport at least 185,000 kilograms of cocaine in the U.S., Tony had commanded members of Honduran security forces, as well as controlled drug laboratories.

In addition, the court filings also stated that he sold machine guns and ammunitions, some from the military, to drug traffickers, and helped cause two murders.

Hernandez said once that his brother's conviction is hard for their family and for him, personally, according to a Star Tribune report.

Prosecutors said that the Honduran president's brother was working with drug traffickers around 2004 by providing information on police checkpoints and air traffic radars.

Meanwhile, the Honduran president was serving his second term.

In 2009, Hernandez was alleged to have become a cocaine supplier with a lab in Colombia that was said to have stamped out some of the drug packets with his initials.
