The two prosecutors heading the Manhattan District Attorney's criminal tax fraud probe into former President Donald Trump and his family business have resigned on Wednesday, a report said.

According to Daily Mail, lawyers Carey R. Dunne and Mark F. Pomerantz quit the case after new Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg raised serious doubts about moving forward with the lawsuit against Trump.

Sources familiar with the probe told the New York Times that it had hit a month-long halt in the middle of prosecutors' presentation of evidence to a grand jury.

Bragg's team reportedly has not questioned any witnesses for more than a month after postponing a plan to grill at least one person. The investigation is about knowing whether the former president inflated the value of his assets to obtain favorable loan terms from banks.

Former Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Bromwich said it could imply that the "probe is dead." In addition, the grand jury that convened to help look into the Trump Organization will have its term expire in April.

It is not immediately clear why Bragg is stepping away from the case. The investigation is separate from a civil tax fraud probe at the Trump Organization being run by New York Attorney General Letitia James, which Donald Trump and two of his children were deposed for.

Resignation of Prosecutors Leading Criminal Probe Into Donald Trump and Family Business

Mark F. Pomerantz confirmed to the New York Times that he had resigned but did not provide any further details regarding the matter. On the other hand, Dunne declined to comment.

Alvin Bragg made a few public statements about the status of the inquiry since taking office. Commenting on the resignations of Pomerantz and Dunne, a spokeswoman for Bragg said he was "grateful for their service," and that the investigation was ongoing.

According to the Times, at least two witnesses visited the Lower Manhattan courthouse last month and stayed inside for hours in connection with the investigation.

Sources familiar with the appearances told the outlet that the witnesses were Donald Trump's longtime accountant and an expert in the real estate industry.

Ron Fischetti, a lawyer for Trump, described the resignation of the two prosecutors to be a sign that Bragg would not bring criminal charges against the former president. Although nothing was official, Fischetti said that in his mind, the case is over, according to Reuters.

The Trump lawyer added that there is no question in his mind that they did it "because there wasn't a case that they could prove, and there was no purpose in them staying there any longer."

New York Attorney General Letitia James' Probe on Trump Organization

A New York state judge recently ruled that the former president must answer questions under oath in a New York civil investigation into his business practices.

Aside from Donald Trump, Judge Arthur Engoron also ordered Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. to comply with the subpoenas issued in December by Letitia James, according to Al Jazeera.

Engoron ruled that Trump and his two children must sit for a deposition within 21 days. The judge said James has the clear right to call the three for depositions.

James noted that her investigation had revealed evidence that the Trump Organization used "fraudulent or misleading" valuations of assets, including golf resorts and skyscrapers, to get loans and earn tax benefits.

The accounting firm that used to work for Donald Trump said the financial statements from 2011-2020 should no longer be relied upon.
