Marion Barber Found Dead

A source noted that police responded to a welfare check at Barber's apartment as someone had called about a water leak.

Police forced their way inside Barber's apartment.

The spokesperson, Joshua Lovell, said that the Frisco Police with the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office are investigating an unattended death at the location, according to a Star-Telegram report.

Dallas Cowboys released an official statement in light of Barber's death, saying that they are "heartbroken by the tragic death" of their former running back.

The team described Marion as an "old-school, hard-nosed football player," with the will to win every down.

The statement added that the former running back had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates.

Marion Barber in NFL

Barber spent seven years in the NFL, with six of those with the Cowboys. He also played an important role in Dallas as he was a strong backup option and starter during his career.

Clutch Points noted that Barber had accumulated a total of 4,780 rushing yards and 59 touchdowns, with his 4.1 yards per attempt making him a suitable NFL running back.

He was the brother of former Houston Texans safety Dominique Barber and son of former New York Jets running back Marion Barber Jr.

His best season was in 2007 when he rushed for 975 yards and scored 10 touchdowns. His game performance had led him to be selected to the Pro Bowl, as reported by NBC Sports.

Barber played his final season in 2011 with the Bears. He rushed for 422 yards and scored six touchdowns as a backup to Matt Forte.

The Chicago Bears also released a statement, saying they are "saddened to learn" of the death of their former Bears running back. The team added that their hearts go out to his family and friends.

Barber retired from the NFL before the start of the 2012 season.

In 2014, he was detained by Mansfield police and taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

He was also arrested in 2019 on two misdemeanor counts of criminal mischief over a 2018 incident where he was alleged to have damaged two cars while he was running in Frisco.

A witness alleged Barber of having charged toward their vehicle, which caused large dents to the side of their cars.

Former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant commented on Barber's life after retirement, saying that the former running back was "down and out bad."
