According to the BBC, Johnny Depp's attorneys said that the actor received the $1M Amber Heard settlement to their defamation case.

Amber Heard vs. Johnny Depp is one of history's most publicized legal battles.

A Virginia jury agreed with Depp, 59, in June, finding that Heard had defamed him in an article where she claimed to be a victim of abuse.

Heard, 36, who announced the settlement on Monday, emphasized that it was "not an act of concession."

She filed an appeal earlier this month, seeking either a reversal of the jury's verdict or a new trial.

However, in a statement released Monday, the "Aquaman" star explained that she had settled because she "lost faith in the American legal system."

"Even if my US appeal is successful, the best outcome would be a retrial," she said. "I simply cannot go through that."

Johnny Depp filed the Amber Heard defamation case in 2018 following an op-ed she wrote for the Washington Post, claiming that she was a "public figure representing domestic abuse" without naming Depp.

Heard responded to the case by filing a counterclaim, resulting in a six-week televised trial that caught the public's attention.

Both parties in this 2017 divorce claimed that the other was violent and abusive during their five-year marriage.

Depp strongly refuted the claims made by his ex-wife in her court testimony that he had abused her emotionally, physically, and sexually.

The jury found in favor of Depp and awarded him $15 million in damages.

Johnny Depp Pledges Amber Heard's Settlement to Charities

A jury in June gave Johnny Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. However, its actual amount in Virginia is only $10.35M due to the cap on punitive damages.

On the other hand, Heard was also awarded a $2 million counterclaim against the "Pirate of the Caribbean" actor.

Depp's lawyers, Benjamin Chew and Camille Vasquez said the actor would get $1M as part of the Amber Heard settlement.

In a statement to NPR, Chew and Vasquez stated, "We are pleased to formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp, who made clear throughout this process that his priority was bringing the truth to light."

The lawyers also said that "the jury's unanimous decision and the resulting judgement in Mr. Depp's favor against Ms. Heard remain fully in place."

The lawyers claim that Heard's acceptance of the result of the legal system's arduous fight for justice is reinforced by the payment of $1M, which Depp has pledged and will donate to charities.

Amber Heard's Net Worth

Due to the Amber Heard vs. Johnny Depp court battles, a portion of Heard's finances is now public knowledge.

According to reports, she earned $250,000 from various ventures in 2014 but spent approximately $210,000 for a net income of $40,000.

She filed for spousal support following her divorce from her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, in 2016 but ultimately withdrew the request.

Heard's divorce settlement gave her $7 million, which she stated she would donate to two charities: Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

However, Fox Business noted that it was discovered in the 2022 Amber Heard defamation trial that only a part of the funds had been paid to the charities.

The ACLU stated in court that it had received only $1.3 million of the $3.5 million committed.

Heard contributed $350,000, and Johnny Depp contributed $100,000. Elon Musk, Heard's ex-boyfriend, donated an additional $500,000, while an unidentified contributor contributed another $350,000.

Heard's net worth was estimated to be less than $6 million after the defamation trial, which is consistent with her attorney Elaine Bredehoft's assertions that Heard is incapable of paying Johnny Depp the $10.35M that was awarded in the trial.

Heard's legal team has attempted to appeal the case's verdict but has still been unsuccessful.
