Variety confirms the sad news that Sonya Eddy, best known as Epiphany Johnson on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital," passed away at 55.

Frank Valentini, "General Hospital" executive producer, said that he was devastated by Eddy's passing, stating that he admired her acting skills and considered her a dear friend.

Eddy first appeared in the long-running medical drama in 2006, playing the part of the blunt, no-nonsense nurse, and she continued in that role through the most current episode, which aired in October.

Her character was the head nurse and the mother of Kiko Ellsworth's character, Stan Johnson, who ended in 2007.

Eddy was, in fact, a certified vocational nurse.

Tyler Ford, her partner at Eddy Ford Entertainment, said she left an everlasting mark on everyone she met, both on and off the screen.

Sonya Eddy Cause of Death

Ford told TMZ that Eddy underwent routine surgery on December 9.

He claims that the actor was released from the hospital after two days, but after a few days, she felt ill again and had to return. The doctors discovered that she had contracted a life-threatening infection that day.

According to Ford, the doctors said Monday morning that they had to put her on life support because the infection was spreading too quickly to be contained; she passed away Monday night.

On Tuesday, the actress' friend, Octavia Spencer, announced Sonya Eddy's death to the world via social media. She says, "The world lost another creative angel," noting her "legions" of fans will miss her.

"R.I.P. Sonya, u will be so missed. What a sense of humor she had. So sad. @GeneralHospital will never be the same," tweeted Kin Shriner.
