The Detroit Pistons and Monty Williams have reached an agreement for him to become the team's head coach, according to league sources.

Sources indicate that the deal is substantial, as the Pistons have offered a guaranteed $78.5 million over a six-year period, with an additional two team option years that could elevate the contract's total value to $100 million, according to Yahoo Sports.

Pistons owner Tom Gores played a significant role in the pursuit of Williams, like his involvement in securing Dwane Casey as head coach in 2018.

Initially, discussions revolved around Pistons assistant coach Charles Lee and Kevin Ollie of Overtime Elite, with Lee emerging as the frontrunner. Although the Pistons had approached Williams, he expressed uncertainty about coaching this season and a desire to take a year off.

Troy Weaver, the general manager of the Detroit Pistons, has had a longstanding relationship with Williams since their time together in Oklahoma City. As Williams began reconsidering coaching next season, Gores maintained communication with him.

Following these developments, the Pistons grew more optimistic and extended an initial offer to Williams. Subsequently, negotiations progressed rapidly, and the agreement terms were settled throughout the weekend.

Participants in the discussions described the atmosphere during the meeting as positive, stating that "we kept the conversation warm."

Monty Williams Becomes the Highest-Paid Coach in the NBA

Williams was a challenging recruit for the Detroit Pistons. Still, team owner Tom Gores, general manager Troy Weaver, and the rest of the front office were determined to sway him with an enticing offer and a compelling vision for the team's future.

They were unwilling to accept his initial rejection and continued their pursuit, The Athletic noted.

According to league sources, Gores went the extra mile by dispatching a private plane to Phoenix to pick up Williams the day after their group meeting. That same evening, the 51-year-old coach found himself in Gores' living room in California, discussing the possibilities ahead.

After a week of negotiations, Williams ultimately agreed on a lucrative contract to make him the highest-paid coach in the NBA.

His track record speaks for itself, particularly since 2021, when he played a pivotal role in leading the Phoenix Suns to the NBA Finals. With the most victories as a head coach in the league during that time, Williams brings a winning pedigree to the Pistons.

The addition of Williams to the Detroit organization is undoubtedly a significant coup. Many argue that he was the most qualified candidate for the job. In 2019, he took over a struggling Suns team that had managed only 19 wins the previous season and quickly transformed them into a 34-win team in his first year.

Now, with rising stars like Isaiah Stewart, Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and the fifth overall pick in this year's draft, the Pistons have a solid foundation for building a promising franchise, much like the Suns squad Williams inherited in 2019.

Detroit believes Williams is the perfect fit for their current roster and situation. When the opportunity arose, Gores, Weaver, and the entire Pistons organization went all-in, placing their full confidence in Williams.

Monty Williams and Phoenix Suns

Monty Williams had an impressive tenure as head coach of the Phoenix Suns, culminating in a remarkable season in 2021-2022.

Under his leadership, the Suns achieved a franchise-best record of 64 wins in the regular season and made a deep playoff run, ultimately reaching the NBA Finals, per ESPN.

During Williams's four-year stint, the team's overall record stood at an impressive 194-115, with a solid winning percentage of .628.

However, despite the Suns's success, Williams's tenure in Phoenix ended unexpectedly in May. The decision to part ways with the head coach was made following the team's playoff elimination at the hands of the Denver Nuggets.
