Where do we even begin to describe last night's MTV Video Music Awards? It was celebrity filled; it was finally held in Brooklyn; and it had a number of the most talked about performances this year.

While the VMAs had more surprises and showcases than Miley Cyrus' twerking videos (and that should be a whole lot), we have compiled several of the most memorable moments in this year's awards night. Check out our list below:

Lady Gaga's Kick-Off Performance

After the success of her 2011 album Born This Way, Gaga is back with a new record ARTPOP. Taking on the VMA stage again, the controversial singer performed her first single "Applause" from her new album.

Just like all the other performances of Gaga, last night's was as outré as it could be. She had several outfit and wig changes during her production - from a nun-like robe with a blockhead, to a black catsuit, to a white lopsided wig, and finally a long blonde wig with only sea shells to cover what has to be covered.

Miley Cyrus Awkward "We Can't Stop" Performance

Miley Cyrus sang her single "We Can't Stop" at the VMAs last night and it wasn't the most pleasant sight for a lot of people. The 20-year-old's on stage act included several huge teddy bears, a latex bikini, a foam finger and her tongue (endlessly sticking out while she twerked her way on stage). Her performance has caused a stir online, with celebrities tweeting their awkward realizations and dismissive reactions. Several memes and GIFs also made the performance even more memorable, like this post by Pistache.com.

Taylor Swift Disses Harry Styles on Stage

Swiftie won the Best Female Video award for her song "I Knew You Were Trouble" and if you haven't heard, rumors say the song was about former lover Harry Styles of One Direction. And while Taylor has always been known for dissing her exes through her songs, no one expected her reception speech to be an "in your face" for the 1D singer.

Receiving the award, Swift said "I also wanna thank the person who inspired this song, who knows exactly who he is, because now I got one of these!" Ouch! Harry, that should hurt. Check out Taylor Swift receiving the award below:

*NSYNC Reunion

Talks about the reunion performance at the VMAs have been swirling days before the awards night. However, no one was actually ready for what would exactly be happening come performance night. Every '90s teenager's dreams came to life when the five-piece boy band appeared on their TV sets.

Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and Lance Bass all donned matching black suits as they sang and danced to the medley of their former hits "Girlfriend" and "Bye Bye Bye." While the performance only lasted a few seconds short of two minutes, it was enough to make every hearts skip a beat. Hopefully, the short reunion performance will turn into a world tour.
