Katy Perry and rapper Riff Raff pulled off the ultimate throwback when they channeled Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake at the 2014 MTV VMAs on Sunday. Who can forget Brit Brit and JT's all-denim matching outfits back at the 2001 American Music Awards when they were still a couple? Thanks to Perry and her date, we all got a little reminder of that epic time.

Katy Perry and Riff Raff recently collaborated on Perry's hit "This is How We Do." Since the "California Girl" is officially single, they decided to pair up for MTV's big night. Whether or not Perry and Riff Raff are more than just friends is questionable, as rumors of them dating have been circling the web. The flashy rapper was seen putting his arm around Perry throughout the night as they talked and laughed together (thanks to MTV audience cameras online).

It is not clear exactly how the idea came about, but the "Roar" singer did hint a little something to pop princess Britney Spears through social media. After Spears shared a video of her impression of Woody Woodpecker, Perry retweeted the video, telling Britney, "This is the best thing I've seen all day bb".

The "Perfume" singer then challenged Perry to an impression, tweeting, "@katyperry You're up next. #Noexcuses. You have 24 hours to you're your best impression." Katy's response; "@britneyspears I'll show u my best impression on the red carpet at the VMA's tomorrow...Wait for it bb."

Not only did Katy get to show off her denim outfit on the Red Carpet, but she also got her very own close up on stage. Perry received the first award of the night for Best Female Video for "Dark Horse," which she accepted with rapper Juicy J.

Riff Raff, Katy Perry, Sam Smith, Miley Cyrus and Juicy J all sat together at the show and seemed to be having the best time ever. The MTV Video Music Awards, of course, didn't disappoint with wardrobe malfunctions, surprising star behavior and amazing performances.

Katy Perry did ultimately admit to fans that her outfit was "a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction."
