Unsurprisingly, the Google Play Edition of the original Moto G are getting Google's Android Lollipop update before most OEM devices do.

But interestingly, Motorola is rolling out the most recent improved version of Lollipop, Android 5.0.1, skipping the 5.0 release entirely. The Android 5.0.1 upgrade was only released on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) last week.

Google Play Editions of the Moto G regardless of carrier should begin to receive notifications that the much anticipated Android Lollipop OS is ready for download over the air (OTA) in their "About' section in settings.

To make sure it's the right update, look for the specific build number LRX21Z.M002. According to Android Authority, the Lollipop update for the Moto G produced immediate results in AnTuTu benchmark tests, jumping the device's performance from a little over 17k to higher than 18.5k.

To look for the update, go into Settings, then About, and then "Check Now" for a system update. If you want to try to sideload it instead, you can download the .Zip from Google directly here.

But really, you should only manually update the system if you've done it before because it requires enabling USB debugging, having ADB on your computer, and entering commands into your desktop's command prompt or terminal.

If you don't know what one of the previous terms you just read means, it's probably more prudent to just be patient and wait for the OTA update.

Marking the GPE Moto G on the list of updated Lollipop devices moves us all one step closer towards Android 5.0 for all (or at least for those with relatively recently-bought devices).

Now that so many Moto, Nexus, and GPE devices are getting the Lollipop rollout, which do you think (or hope) will be the first non-Motorola OEM to get that coveted OTA notification? Let us know in the comments!
