Manchester United's turnaround continues after defeating Liverpool, finishing the day in third place in the English Premier League (EPL) standings with the victory at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Manchester United keeper David De Gea had eight saves on the day to shut out Liverpool -- including an athletic, spectacular kick-save after getting beat by Raheem Sterling on the breakaway -- while Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata all scored on Liverpool keeper Brad Jones, who started in place of Simon Mignolet. Mata scored on a controversial play in the 40th minute in which the midfielder headed Van Persie's cross past Jones despite clearly being offside. Mata would return the favor to the Dutch striker assisting Van Persie with his goal in the 71st minute after the Liverpool defense sloppily failed to clear the ball out of the box.

Manchester United finishes the day in third place with 31 points, eight points behind EPL leader Chelsea and five points behind second-place Manchester City, giving the team great optimism that they can still contend for the league title.

"We are always looking at how we can get to the top," said Manchester United defender Michael Carrick. "All in all we are in a pretty decent position at the moment. We need to stay up there, we need to stay in touch, then come Christmas and come January, as we've said for many years now, if we are up there challenging then we will give ourselves a great chance. We just want to keep this run going week by week and see where it takes us."

Both Chelsea and Manchester City both managed to earn wins this weekend defeating teams stuck in the relegation zone.
