In a historic first, Sony Pictures has decided to release “The Interview” simultaneously in some movie theaters as well as online.

YouTube and Google Play have agreed to stream the movie that caused international strife after major movie theater chains opted to not screen it following threats from a hacker group.

YouTube first agreed to make the movie available online, according to the Associated Press. The news comes one day after Sony announced a limited release of the film to select theaters around the country.

CNN Money reports the movie studio had been in talks with YouTube for a week and finally announced on Wednesday that the movie would be available to rent and buy on both YouTube and Google Play. Rentals would be around $6 and buying the film around $15.

Sony had also been in talks to make the movie available through Apple’s iTunes Store but the talks collapsed. However, they may resume after Christmas.

“The Interview” will become available to stream on YouTube at 1 p.m. EST on Christmas Eve, reports the AP. The film will also be available on Xbox Video and a Sony website dedicated to stream the film.

"It has always been Sony's intention to have a national platform on which to release this film," said Sony Pictures chair and CEO Michael Lynton in a statement Wednesday. "Negotiations with digital providers began last Wednesday, and, as of this morning the film will be available in around 300 independently owned theaters starting Thursday.”

He added that Sony “chose the path of digital distribution first so as to reach as many people as possible on opening day, and we continue to seek other partners and platforms to further expand the release."

On Tuesday Sony Pictures announced, it would allow for the film to be screened in select theaters, reported Reuters, a decision hailed by the president and the movie’s main cast members, who took to Twitter to celebrate.

To know if a theater near you is screening the movie, The Wrap has a list of theaters around the country that will show “The Interview.”
