With the release of the new "Assassin's Creed," gamers and fans are wondering what happened to the delayed movie adaptation set to star Michael Fassbender.

In a recent interview, Fassbender spoke about the progress on the film and stated that the film is currently in pre-production.

"You say it's a long time," Fassbender said, "but what I've found -- it's all new to me, but starting to develop scripts and work on them, they take time. It just takes time to get a good story together and we really want to do it right. It's exciting. It's going to start this year, we'll be filming in September."

The film is set to reunite Marion Cotillard and Fassbender after their upcoming film "Macbeth." It will also reunite Justin Kurzel with the actors as he directed the two actors in "Macbeth." Cotillard and Fassbender are set to grace the red carpet at Cannes as their film will premiere in the competition slate and is among the most anticipated Shakespearean adaptations in years.

Fassbender is currently working on the new "X-men: Apocalypse" film and is also promoting his new film "Slow West," which won the International Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. The actor is also set to star as Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic directed by Danny Boyle and also starring Kate Winslet.

Meanwhile Cotillard was recently nominated for an Academy Award for her work in "Two Days, One Night" and also starred in the award-winning film "The Immigrant." Cotillard is also known for her work on "La Vie En Rose," "Inception," "Rust and Bone" and "The Dark Knight Rises." The actress is set to star in "Mal de Pierres" and "It's Only the End of the World."

Kurzel is best known for his work on "The Snowtown Murders," which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to outstanding reviews.

"Assassin's Creed" is expected to hit theaters Dec. 21, 2016.
