The New York Yankees made it to the postseason for the first time since 2012 but was quickly eliminated by the upstart Houston Astros in the American League Wild Card Game. The Yankees lost 3-0, per ESPN stats, at the Yankee Stadium in front of their 50,000 fans, and many were left pondering on the team's next move as there would be a lot of big-name free agents this winter.

The New York Post reported that if only the late great Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was alive, he would solve the team's problem with money. He would probably splash big contracts to soon-to-be free agents like David Price, Zack Greinke and Yoenis Cespedes as well as trading for Ian Kinsler and Craig Kimbrel, relinquishing the youth of the future for winning in the present.

But as the report noted, Hal Steinbrenner has other plans, which is to let big contracts in the team expire. Carlos Beltran and Mark Teixeira are set to be free agents in 2016 while Brent Gardner and Alex Rodriguez come off the books in 2017. Their projected salary for next season is at $190 million and the front office will pay another $23 million for the arbitration-eligible players on the roster.

Among players eligible for arbitration are Ivan Nova, Michael Pineda, Dustin Ackley, Nate Eovaldi and Didi Gregorious, per MLB Trade Rumors. Aces David Price and Zack Greinke will probably cost $200 million each and won't fit the team's plans in terms of salaries but very well fits their need, as reported by New York Daily News.

Another possibility of an additional bat for the lineup is outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, who is looking at a possible $120 million contract in free agency. The New York Daily News suggests that it is better to sign Justin Upton, who fits the Yankees' need of a bat that can hit lefties.

Among other free agents mentioned by the New York Post that can help the Yankees are starting pitchers Hisashi Iwakuma, Jeff Samardzija, Wei-Yin Chen and Brett Anderson, while hitters Asdrubal Cabrera and Ben Zobrist are available. Among possible trade candidates for next season are aces Sonny Gray of the Oakland Athletics, Carlos Carrasco of the Cleveland Indians and Tyson Ross of the San Diego Padres.

The Yankees could possibly just keep their roster intact with only minor changes as the team has plenty of prospects ready for the big leagues. Their top prospects include hitters Rob Refsnyder, Greg Bird, Jorge Mateo and Aaron Judge. Pitcher Luis Severino has also shown a glimpse of his future as the next ace for the 27-time World Series Champions, per MLB.com.
