Boy Dies After TikTok Challenge Gone Wrong

Fox 25 noted that the police responded on the Western Oaks Apartments on late Monday night, where they discovered the boy, unresponsive. Further details regarding the victim were not furthered by the authorities. However, Bethany Police District (BPD) confirmed that that the boy was transported to OU Children's Hospital.

However, on Tuesday at around 6:50 a.m., the boy was pronounced dead.

Investigators revealed, after speaking to the child's family, that the boy attempted a TikTok challenge that went wrong, and underscored that the incident was not a suicide attempt.

Investigators emphasized that the child attempted the TikTok challenge called "black out". The said trend encourages the users and children to choke themselves until they pass out or lose consciousness.

New York Pose reported that experts warned that the viral trend or game on TikTok may cause fainting, brain damage, and seizures to those who would try the challenge. Meanwhile, authorities have warned parents to stay involved in their children's social media usage.

"Now more than ever due to lockdowns, kids are bored and looking to occupy their time.," the Police said. The authorities further noted that social media plays an "influential" role in the lives of the children, noting that parents must analyze its effects on their children.

The age of the boy was not identified by the child but under the current policy of TikTok, individuals, aged 13 years old and above, were allowed to make an account and use their service.

Other TikTok Challenges That Posed Dangers

The death of the boy who attempted the "black out" trend was not the first time TikTok challenges posed dangers to its users. In late May, it can be remembered that a teen from Oregon also experienced the dangers of the said challenges online, after she sustained third-degree burns following a version of another trend.

Identified as Destini Crane, the teen reportedly attempted a TikTok challenge that encourages to draw a shape on a mirror using flammable materials such as rubbing alcohol, a lighter, and a candle. Cranes mother highlighted that she heard her daughter screaming while the bathroom door and the Oregon teen were on fire.

The incident prompted three skin-grafting surgeries on Crane and made her mobility limited. The incident also made the teen stayed in an intensive care unit.

Another challenge called the "skull breaking challenge" also prompted multiple injuries from the challengers who attempted the trend. The said challenge featured two people kicking the legs of a third, airborne person from underneath, which will make them fall over. The said challenge was banned by TikTok due to the dangers it posed to its users.

Despite some of the challenges that possess dangers, TikTok's policy prohibits content that shows dangerous challenges and amateur stunts, as well as videos that normalize those kinds of behaviors.
