Puerto Rican pop sensation Ricky Martin is an icon not just in Latin pop but in the entire music industry. After surviving a scandal where his nephew accused him of domestic abuse and incest, the "King of Latin Pop" is still going strong but also ready to move on after his nephew withdrew his case and the judge threw it out.

Ricky Martin's Early Life

The man we now know as Ricky Martin was born Enrique Martin Morales on December 24, 1971. He was born to psychologist Enrique Martin Negroni and accountant Nereida Morales, according to Wealthy Gorilla.

He started singing and acting lessons at the age of six, acted in school plays, and joined the choir. By the age of eight, young Enrique started appearing in TV commercials in Puerto Rico.

His grandmother was a poet, and she inspired him to write his own songs, which soon helped him rise to new heights in his music career.

Everything changed in 1984 when he joined the Latin boyband Menudo at the age of 12. However, the band had a strict schedule. While he loved performing, he found it tiresome and decided to leave the band at the age of 17.

Because he was still a minor, he had no access to his bank account and had to wait until he graduated from high school in Puerto Rico. Once he came of age and turned 18, young Ricky Martin moved to New York City to make a name for himself.

One of his earliest post-Menudo gigs was a role in the play Mama Ama el Rock. For this, he had to move to Mexico City. This then launched an acting career as he appeared in a Mexican telenovela soon after.

His acting career in Mexico then led him to sign with Sony, which launched his even more successful music career as the man we know today. He launched his first solo album, Ricky Martin, which was so successful that he had a tour of Latin America following its launch.

The '90s was when the "King of Latin Pop" actually made much of his career, appearing in Broadway musicals like Les Misérables in 1996, as well as launching one hit album after the next.

He became so big that he wrote a song for the FIFA World Cup and performed it during the finals in 1998. This performance brought Latin pop to worldwide attention. He even won a Grammy that year for his fourth album, Vuelve.

He transitioned to an English audience in 1999 in what may be his biggest hit yet, "Livin' la Vida Loca." From there, he never looked back, from TV appearances and concerts to winning even more Grammy Awards.

He publicly came out as gay in 2010 and clarified that while he is attracted to both men and women, he only wants to have romantic relationships with men. He started dating Jwan Yosef in 2016 and married later.
