The "Doctor Who" Christmas special yielded a big ratings boost and one surprise – Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman, will be staying on in the time-traveling series. The 12th Time Lord, played by Peter Capaldi, will still be working with the "impossible girl."

Aired on Christmas day, the special titled "Last Christmas" gave Whovians a clear answer as to whether or not Clara would continue to be the Doctor's companion. At the very end of the episode, it stated that Clara and the Doctor would be back in 2015.

Coleman, 28, joined the series in 2012 and has worked with Matt Smith's 11th Doctor and Capaldi's 12th. Since August of this year, there were rumors about whether or not Coleman would stay on, BBC News reported. But Coleman has changed her mind, and she is excited about more stories to tell with the Doctor.

"It's wonderful," Coleman said about continuing on as Clara. "I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn't walk away with the story being unresolved."

She added, "There is so much more to do. I think they've finally just reached a point where they really understand each other."

Coleman is aware of the dynamic and the great relationship that she and Capaldi have.

"The arrival of the 12th Doctor has just kind of dropped this whole bombshell and allowed the dynamic to totally change, so I think just when Clara was feeling more comfortable in the relationship, it has suddenly thrown something new up," Coleman said, BBC News reported.

The speculation of her departure had reached fever pitch. Coleman will stay on until half of Season 9. The new season will return next fall, WalesOnline reported.

It's not just fans who are happy about Clara's return. "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat is as well. Moffat says that Capaldi, 56, and Coleman have great chemistry.

A producer on the show has revealed that the original scripts, written around Coleman's departure, had to be destroyed. In the original draft, Clara was supposed to grow old and die. In the Christmas special, Clara did grow old, but it ended up being another dream in the "Inception"-like episode. In the new version, the Doctor and Clara walked into the TARDIS hand in hand, WalesOnline reported.

Capaldi is also thrilled to have Clara continue on with the series.

"I'm thrilled," Capaldi said to the BBC. "Jenna has just been fantastic and such a pleasure to work with."

The pair grew close off camera. It was during the World Tour to promote season eight of "Doctor Who," where they visited seven cities across five continents in 12 days, that they bonded, WalesOnline reported.
