After losing the lawsuit filed by former Georgia election workers Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman over spreading false information about them, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This came after the judge who found him liable of defamation ordered him to pay the two Georgia women $146 million in damages.

As Donald Trump's then-attorney, Giuliani falsely claimed that Freeman and Moss were stuffing ballot boxes in favor of eventual winner Joe Biden. Several courts have already found the former mayor's statements to be false, and thus, the judge ruled that Giuliani did, in fact, defame the two women.

Rudy Giuliani claims that his estimated liabilities are between about $100 million and $500 million and that he is now bankrupt. However, Moss and Freeman's attorney, Michael Gottlieb, says that the former mayor is just trying to get out of paying what he owes to his clients, according to CBS News.

"This maneuver is unsurprising, and it will not succeed in discharging Mr. Giuliani's debt to Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss," the attorney said in a statement shortly after the former Trump attorney filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

The filing also came a day after US District Court Judge Beryl Howell ordered Giuliani to pay the two former Georgia election workers. The judge expressed concern that the former Republican presidential candidate may have been dishonest about his finances and that he might not comply with the judgment.

Rudy Giuliani Adviser Says Bankruptcy Filing 'No Surprise'

Rudy Giuliani spokesperson and political adviser Ted Goodman released a statement regarding the former New York City mayor seeking bankruptcy protection, saying that it "should be a surprise to no one" because "no person could have reasonably believed that Mayor Giuliani would be able to pay such a high punitive amount."

Goodman noted that the Chapter 11 filing would give Giuliani "the opportunity and time to pursue an appeal, while providing transparency for his finances under the supervision of the bankruptcy court, to ensure all creditors are treated equally and fairly throughout the process."

Despite this, however, the Associated Press noted that the Chapter 11 bankruptcy declaration will not erase the almost $146 million verdict against Giuliani as stated in US bankruptcy laws. The law states that debts that come from a "willful and malicious injury" inflicted on someone else will not be dissolved, and Giuliani would still owe the two plaintiffs that massive amount of money.

Rudy Giuliani Doubling Down on Attacks Vs. Former Georgia Poll Workers Could Land Him in Jail

Despite losing the case, Rudy Giuliani continued doubling down on his false claims that the two Georgia women committed election fraud. However, a former federal prosecutor says that this could land him in jail over in the Georgia election interference case.

In an interview with MSNBC, Former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner stated that it is possible that Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman could testify against him and Donald Trump in that sprawling Georgia RICO case. Should he continue attacking them and spreading false information about them, this could constitute witness intimidation, and the judge could order him jailed because of it.

"It feels like Rudy should now be up because it sure looks like he's violating the conditions of his release in the Georgia case by continuing to intimidate, lie about, defame, and endanger Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman," he explained. "You know, he is on release in the Georgia case. I have his release conditions right here, and Joy, number five is that the defendant, Giuliani, 'shall perform no act to intimidate any person known to him to be a co-defendant or witness in the case, or to otherwise obstruct the administration of justice.'"
