Mets All-Star ace Matt Harvey may need Tommy John surgery after an MRI revealed that the right-hander has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. The Mets said Harvey would be placed on the Disabled list.

The Associated Press reported that Harvey and Mets general Manager Sandy Alderson were both "shocked" when they received the news today.

According to Adam Rubin at ESPN New York, Alderson said that the team would know more about Harvey's injury in the coming weeks. Harvey has swelling in his arm and the doctors will perform another MRI once it goes down.

Harvey started this year's MLB All-Star game for the National League and has emerged as one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. Harvey led the Mets rotation this season with a very successful 2013 campaign, going 9-5 with a 2.27 ERA while striking out 191 batters.

His magical season recently reached a bumpy patch as he started to struggle, but he was plagued by pain and fatigue in his last start. As it persisted, the team sent him to Manhattan to get the MRI.

"I figure everybody is going to go through a stretch there where you've got to battle through some fatigue and some discomfort," Harvey said to reporters after last Saturday's start.

The Mets are gearing up to make a solid starting rotation in the coming years, headlined by Harvey and fellow young pitching prospect Zach Wheeler. If Harvey were forced to miss any significant time heading into next season, it would put a damper on the hype that has surrounded the young star.
