Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gets a key Iowa endorsement toward her presidential campaign.

CNN is reporting that former Iowa Sen. Tom Harkin endorsed Clinton's candidacy for president in a Des Moines Register article last night. In the article, Sen. Harkin explained his decision on endorsing Clinton, "As Democrats, we're fortunate to have a slate of candidates that are all fine individuals, but we need a fighter who has a record of getting things done and the vision for the future that will build on the progress we've made. For my wife, Ruth and I, that candidate is Hillary Clinton."

Harkin went into more details on why Clinton is the best choice for president.

"Hillary Clinton's commitment to public service stems from the same values. Her mother, Dorothy, was abandoned by her parents and sent to live with relatives who did not want her. By age 14, she was working to support herself just to get by. Guided by her mother's experience, Hillary has devoted her career to championing the needs of children. She has been a tireless advocate for women and families since I first met her," he wrote.

"As First Lady of the United States she was instrumental in advancing the idea that health care should be a right and not a privilege," continued Harkin. "As my colleague in the Senate and as Secretary of State, she made women's rights and economic opportunity central to American foreign policy. Hillary has never forgotten who she is fighting for."

Harkin also went on to praise Clinton's dedication to "the idea of expanding opportunities."

Harkin is a beloved voice in the Iowa Democratic Party. Harkin, who retired in December 2014 after 30 years as senator, ran for president in 1992. He has always been a longtime ally of the Clintons.

According to CNN, Clinton trails fellow presidential candidate Bernie Sanders in the latest New Hampshire poll. Sanders has 44 percent of the votes while Clinton has 37 percent of the vote. Vice President Joe Biden, who is considering a run for president, is in third with 9 percent.

On the Republican side, Donald Trump has a significant lead in the Iowa caucuses with 22 percent. Trailing Trump is neurosurgeon Ben Carson with 14 percent of the votes.
