Freddie Prinze Jr. has signed on to be the voice of Disney's first "Cowboy Jedi", Kanan. The character will be featured in the upcoming animated series, "Star Wars Rebels."

Kanan is a former Jedi Knight who has been driven underground by Order 66, Emperor Palpatine's decree that wiped out the Jedi in "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith." "Rebels" takes place 14 years after "Episode III", where most Jedi's have been killed and the knights effectively wiped out. To survive, Kanan kept his powers and skills hidden. He is the captain of the "Ghost" that is likened to Solo's Millennium Falcon from the original "Star Wars" trilogy, writes Yahoo.

Prinze, 37, is making no attempts to hide his excitement with this project. Sporting a scar on his face from Jedi fights in his youth, "For people who are around our age and a bit older, Star Wars is in our DNA. I've heard 'May the Force be with you' about as many times as 'Hey, how you doing?,'" reports USA Today.

The video below shows Freddie and the rest of the team introducing Kanan's character.

Kanan's character is full of bravado, which Prinze attributes to deep emotional trauma. "He definitely has seen more than what a young man should see. And what he had to see was pretty much the worst thing you would have to witness."

Executive producer Dave Filoni says Kanan is different from the other typical stoic knights. He has a banter that is as sharp as his blue lightsaber strokes. Disney articulates that Kanan is less traditional as he carries a blaster, and wears armor and a holster but he still has a samurai-like ponytail, hinting at his Jedi Knight origins, writes CNET.

Prinze tells USA Today, "Kanan is pretty much the coolest guy in the universe."

Freddie's 4-year-old daughter with wife Sarah Michelle Gellar doesn't seem to be sharing the same view of the character, nore does she know much about the series. Right now, they're preparing to watch the original "Star Wars" movie. Freddie hopes this will convince her of the coolness of lightsabers and know what a big deal being Kanan is.
