During a recent interview with Australia's "The Project," Katy Perry opened up about her struggles with depression brought on by her 2011 split from comedian, Russell Brand, Mirror U.K. reports.

"It was sad and there were thoughts, but there were never actions, thankfully," Perry said in reference to contemplating suicide.

While suffering through her depression at the time, the "Dark Horse" singer went on to write and record her song, "By the Grace of God," which details how she felt during that troubled time.

"[It] is the first song that I wrote coming to make this record, when I was in a different place, I was in a darker place," she said about the song,  which is featured on her fourth studio album, "Prism."

Prior to her interview with "The Project," Perry also spoke to Billboard last year about her struggles with depression and her decision to write the song, "By the Grace of God."

"That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point. I asked myself, 'Do I want to endure? Should I continue living?' All the songs [on Prism] are real-life moments," she said.

When asked why she chose to be so candid in her music, Perry explained that her songs might help fans who are struggling through similar issues.

Despite her past struggles, Perry appears to be happier and has moved on to DJ and producer, Diplo, E! News reports.

So far, Perry has remained coy about her relationship with Diplo, but she did wish the producer a happy birthday via Twitter on Monday.

In addition to Perry, other celebrities including Wayne Brady and Sharon Osbourne have recently gone on record to reveal that they, too, suffer from depression.

Osbourne even admitted to taking antidepressants to help her through her struggles.

Like Perry, Wayne and Osbourne have taken steps to overcome their depression and spread awareness on mental illness.
