Everyone will forever argue that their generation is the best. Where is that darn time machine that can finally take us back to the late 90s? To the millennium, the pinnacle of years to come. Every time I run across an episode of All That, I melt. Why? Because it transports me back to my teenage years, where everything was butterfly hair clips, platform sandals and yellow tang tops. Then you start to reminisce on your school crushes, that jerk that broke your heart and that song that fixed it all.

Let's take a trip back to those songs that you adored back in the early 2000s. The songs that got you through your first kiss. The artist who serenated you as you cried yourself to sleep from a broken heart (Larry -- I still hate you). And the lyrics that boost you up when you realized you were over him/her. It's impossible to actually get to all the songs that we jammed to on our CD Players, but here's my top 10. Sit back, put on your lip liner and secretly cry a little.

1. Savage Garden -- "I Knew I Loved You"

Oh my god. Are you feeling guilty yet for forgetting this song? It was like every time you fell in love, (because when you are a teenager you love everyone who looks at you) this was the song playing in the background. "I Knew I Loved You" was Australian pop duo Savage Garden's 1999 hit, that reached the number one spot on the Billboard charts and every young girl's heart. I sure remember trying to "spit game" and recite this song to my little boyfriend at the time. Actually, I think I asked my boyfriend the other day; "Did you know that I loved you before I met you?" It worked.

Anyway, even the video is the epitome of 1999. Kirsten Dunst stars in the video as Darren Hayes's love interest, wearing a chocker necklace, straight hair parted in the middle in a New York City subway. Watch this music video today and you are sure to go back in time. You will find yourself sitting on the couch right after school watching TRL on MTV, while mom made dinner in the kitchen (please take me back now!). Then you would start doodling his name on your notebook instead of doing homework and eventually end up calling him and not finishing your homework.

Really makes you wonder how you got through school huh?

2. Mandy Moore -- "Cry"

Remember Mandy Moore? Yes, I sort of forgot about her existence too. Some artists part aways from the Hollywood and some stick around, that's all. Mandy was actually part of the bubblegum pop scene. She also revealed that her real passion was always acting over singing, and in "Cry" she did both. "Cry" was Mandy Moore's song to "A Walk To Remember", a 2002 romance movie starring Shane West and Moore. Also the saddest movie in the world.

How many of you cried to "A Walk to Remember"? I think I cried to "Cry" just because it obviously made me think of the movie, geez. "It was then that I realized that forever was in your eyes..." Isn't that the meaningful sentence you have ever heard? Even at that time when we didn't know what real love was, those words gave us hope to one day feel that. At the time we though we would feel that with Billy forever but... where's Billy now?

3. Kelly Clarkson -- "Behind These Hazel Eyes"

Kelly Clarkson and her powerful vocals continue to take us back today. At one point her 2004 hit "Behind These Hazel Eyes" was every girl's excuse to scream it out after getting her heart broken. In a world where cell phones and texting was still pretty new, all you could do is restrain yourself from calling his house 50 times and leaving a nasty message on an answering machine that everyone could hear.

Instead, you turned up the radio and sang along to the American Idol winner's heartbreaking jam. Can we talk about that video? Man, that sure can fire a girl up! Hmm, this song could arouse anger like nothing else could. But afterwards, you felt as a big rock had been lifted off of your shoulders. You would phone your friends like, "You wanna go to the mall, I just did some 'Kelly therapy' and I'm ready to find a rebound." Yeaaaaah!!!

4. Britney Spears - "From The Bottom of My Broken Heart"

"From the Bottom of My Broken Heart" was released in 1999. Britney Spears had just taken over Pop Music and she was making her mark in the world. Tell me, who else can take you back to 1999 like Britney can? Her music takes you directly to the school hallways where you used to walk by the one guy who had your total attention and didn't know. Those first feelings of curiosity and innocent looks.

The long title of the song says it all. A song about raw feelings and emotions of how it feels to live with a broken heart being so young. You don't yet quite understand what you're feeling but you know it hurts. Darn it Britney why did you have to connect with us on many levels? Here's a song to just cry to, feel sorry for yourself and then get over it and go to school in the morning ('cause that's how fast life moved at the time).

5. NSYNC -- "This I Promise You"

Obvious NSYNC fan here... duh. Life at this time consisted of admiring my J-14 magazine posters of NSYNC while I listened to "No Strings Attached" over and over again. "This I Promise You" was released as a single in the year 2000. Justin's curly blonde locks paraded around a forest while the rest of the guys sang their melodies in the video. NSYNC even did a Spanish version of this song, which they performed with Latin sensation guy group Song by Four.

To be honest, no girl on earth was probably thinking about any other guy when this song played. However, this was a smooth one to dedicate to the girls, wasn't it, gentlemen? Never make a promise that you can't keep but who cares when the lyrics of this song could get you any girl. Who's thanking NSYNC now, huh fellas?

6. Backstreet Boys -- "Shape of My Heart"

So yes, I was an NSYNC fan and used to get into fights with my friends over BSB or NSYNC being better but... I will not hate. Backstreet boys had some pretty awesome songs. One song that showed us the sensitive side to a man full of sadness and regret was "Shape of My Heart." "Shape of My Heart" was released also in the year 2000 (it was a competition with these two or anything) and captured our foolish little hearts.

This is the song you listened to after your boyfriend would call another girl and you dumped him for cheating. Then you would let him show you the shape of his heart. All of those pleas would start to make sense after Nick Carter would admit what a fool he was -- if Nick was sorry, well so was your boyfriend. Again, another boy band not appreciated enough by guys.

7. Casey and Jojo -- "Crazy"

Ahhhh! The perfect song with the perfect movie that equaled all the perfect feelings. How can anyone forget the talented duo of Casey and Jojo? These two came up with the soundtrack of our lives "Crazy." The song was actually the soundtrack to 2001's "Save the Last Dance," every teenager's favorite movie. Starring Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, the movie's high school plot, mixed with the hood and a little dancing was pretty brilliant to us.

Who didn't just adore this song? Casey and Jojo's vocals were strong and defining. The words of the song told such a tale of love and desperation, that this was the time we felt we should fight for love. Remember, at this point in our lives we weren't really worried about real problems so we felt love and betrayal was it. "I'm going crazy just thinking about you baby..." and we were glad who weren't the only ones experiencing this insanity.

8. Ashanti -- "Foolish"

Ohhh, Ashanti, where did you go?? The gel down side burns, the smooth voice and the songs that marked the first time we felt fearless, vulnerable and sexy all at once. That's exactly what "Foolish" and Ashanti represented. The song was released in 2002 and the lyrics told the story of a girl admitting be foolishly in love.

These were our golden years when we learned long from right in so many different aspects of life. So this song taught us what love can do to you. We didn't want to be foolish with Mike, but we would stay anyway, huh ladies?

9. Rihanna -- "Unfaithful"

So this was it. The song that really made us notice Rihanna. Her arrival was marked by a sultry slap in the face to the men who thought they were the only one capable of cheating. By 2006, when the song was released we were, what -- in high school? Yes, this song was my cell phone's ringtone and my boyfriend had to deal with it.

Singer and song writer Ne-Yo wrote this song and Rihanna rocked it. This was an ego booster for us ladies who had reached the peak of empowerment. No, cheating wasn't okay for either side in a relationship but for once we got to be the ones on the other side of things. Felt kind of good, didn't it?

10. Nelly ft. Kelly Rowland -- "Dilemma"

"Dilemma" by Nelly and Kelly Rowland was released in 2002. Listening to this song really takes me back to a time of pure fun and growing up. High school is a time where you get to know yourself and you learn who you are. Yes this is another song about a girl stepping out on her relationship and as young girls...we also like it.

Rapper Nelly still had his bandage on his cheek and Kelly was still part of the girl group Destiny's Child. It was a good time. "I love you, Nelly, I need you..." Can you hear her sing it. What a perfect song. Even though it did add to the confusion of liking more than one guy at once..ugh.

So those are my top 10 songs that take us back into those lovely bill-less times that were quickly cut short (I started working at 16... bummer). I bet you you're thinking about your high school crush right now. Please don't go Facebook stalking him, your husband won't appreciate it. Other fav's that I love are Usher's "Let it Burn," Justin Timberlake's "Cry Me A River," Beyoncé's "Irreplaceable," Usher and Alicia Key's "My Boo," Ne-Yo's "Mad" and Carrie Underwood "Before he Cheats" (love you, Vengeance). What are your favorite late 90s and 2000s songs? Which of these are you watching the music video too right now?

Hope you had a good time on this journey to the past.
